A huge and well deserved congratulations are in order for Vicky Phelan, who is set to receive the Freedom of Limerick award, the highest honour that can be given to a person by the council.
The decision was made after Limerick City and County Council unanimously agreed to bestow the award on the cervical health check campaigner; “The honour is reserved for those who have made exceptional or unique contributions to the common good or to persons who have made outstanding contributions to the life of Limerick.”
Speaking about their choice, Limerick Mayor, Daniel Butler said; “Vicky is an inspiration. She has faced and continues to face her health challenges head-on, with a drive and determination that has garnered the respect and admiration of all.”
Continuing, the Council shared their reasons for choosing Vicki was what she did for the women of Ireland in uncovering the Cervical Check scandal and her tireless support of other women who have been affected and are fighting for justice.”
Vicki, who is originally from Kilkenny spoke about her delight in receiving this honour; “I am a very proud blow-in from Kilkenny who has made her home in Limerick.
“I have always felt welcomed and accepted in Limerick, even before I became this public figure so I would be absolutely thrilled to accept the offer,” she added.
The mother-of-two recently shared an emotional update on her treatment plan as she travelled home to Ireland after drug trials in the US this year.
Now that she is back, she shared the sad new that she is undergoing palliative chemotherapy; “I returned home earlier this week and am taking the time to reconnect with my kids and to absorb this news before I start down the chemotherapy road.”
The mother-of two added; “The ‘good’ news is that I can still have treatment and that this treatment will keep me alive until Christmas at least. The bad news is that the treatment I am about to start on is extremely toxic and will take its toll on my body and my mind.”
We are sending Vicky all of our well wishes at this time.
