Family, friends, colleagues and listeners up and down the country are remembering Larry Gogan today, on the first anniversary of his passing.
The much-loved broadcaster passed away in January 2020, at the age of 85.
Larry first started working in RTE in the ‘60s and went on to have a brilliant career, spanning over 50 years.
Today, some of those closest to Larry have paid tribute to him, looking back on the wonderful times they shared together.

At the time of his passing, RTE’s Director General Dee Forbes said, “Larry Gogan was a legend, and a genuine national institution.
“He transcended generations – whether it was a hilarious moment on the Just a Minute Quiz, the breakneck countdown of the weekly top 40, or the first play of a Christmas song – Larry didn’t just preserve these traditions, he created them.
“Legendary, cross-generational, universally popular: The Golden Hour and the “Just a Minute Quiz” were national institutions, just the like the man himself.
“He returns now to his beloved Florrie – we are the poorer for his loss, but the richer for having known this gentleman of the airwaves.”
Last month, Larry’s grandchildren remembered the late broadcaster, as they played the first Christmas song of 2020 on RTE 2FM in his honour.
Every December 1st, Larry would take to the airwaves and kick off the festive season in style and this year, while it was a little different, was just as magical.
Before Mariah Carey’s hit single All I Want For Christmas began playing, the kids decided to say a few words and pay tribute to their granddad.
“December 1st was always a very special day for our granddad Larry. For weeks before he would get the same question from everyone every year – ‘What song are you starting this Christmas with?’
“This year sadly Larry is no longer with us and we miss him loads. So to mark this day the Larry way we have chosen a Christmas song for him.
“This year for his Christmas song on 2FM is All I Want for Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey. Happy Christmas Larry.”
We’re sure he’s incredibly proud of them.
