It hasn’t been long since Normal People left our screens, but thankfully, we’re set to get another helping of Paul Mescal very soon, as he’s the leading star of a brand new short film dropping later this month.

Drifting follows two Irish lads in a rural town who have been best friends since they were kids. But as time moves on and the pair get older, one of them has to break the news to the other that they’re emigrating and leaving the town and life they once lived behind.

GAA man Cian, played by Paul Mescal is often cared for by his best friend Pat (played by Dafhyd Flynn). Picking him up after drunken nights out, taking his side after he finds himself in another fight, trying to get with another lad’s girlfriend, Cian appears like a bit of a liability and now, Pat has to make the tough choice to move on alone.

Over the course of 24 hours, the movie unfolds and with a strong focus on the power of male friendships and the heartache of flying the nest as an adult – something which is all too relatable these days, Drifting looks at Irish life and tough goodbyes.

Directed by Robert Higgins and Patrick McGivney, Drifting, the short film will make its premiere at the digital Galway Film Fleadh this year, with 400 lucky people getting to see the flick for the first time on Saturday, July 11.

The whole movie was also shot in Longford and comes with incredible music from Daithí – a regular on the Irish festival music scene, so you know it’s going to be a good one.

Hopefully, it won’t be too long until it’s shared with the rest of the country but until then, you can check out the trailer below. We cannot wait.
