People won’t be happy with Rory McIlroy today, as he has made some very controversial comments about the Rio Olympics.

During the conference for the Open Championship, the pro golfer, who pulled out of the games due to fears over the Zika virus,  was questioned about the game and asked whether he will watch the Olympics.

Despite his decision to not attend himself, his answer was very surprising.

The World number 4 golfer had some harsh words, revealing that he won’t be supporting his fellow golfers, Padraig Harrington, Seamus Power and Leona Maguire, as he won’t be watching the golf competitions.

“I don’t feel like I’ve let the game down at all. I didn’t get into golf to try and grow the game. I got into golf to win championships and win major championships, and all of a sudden you get to this point and there is a responsibility on you to grow the game, and I get that.

“But at the same time that’s not the reason that I got into golf. I got into golf to win. I didn’t get into golf to get other people into the game.

“But, look, I get where different people come from and different people have different opinions. But I’m very happy with the decision that I’ve made and I have no regrets about it,” he said.

“I’ll probably watch the Olympics but I’m not sure golf will be one of the events that I’ll watch.” When quizzed further on which events he would watch, the 26-year-old responded, “track and field, swimming, diving… the stuff that matters.”

Rory’s comments come after Peter Dawson, president of the International Golf Federation, spoke on Monday claiming that some members of the golfing elite were “overreacting” to the Zika threat.
