The best films to watch this Paddy’s Day

While we can’t go out and mark St Patrick’s Day as we usually would, with parades, parties and celebrations with our loved ones, we can still enjoy the day from the comfort and safety of our home.

Check out some of these Irish films to get stuck into this St. Patrick’s Day.

Wolfwalkers (2020)

A fantastic artistic animation film suitable for the whole family. The story, the visuals, everything about it is perfection. “In a time of superstition and magic, when wolves are seen as demonic and nature an evil to be tamed, a young apprentice hunter, Robyn, comes to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last pack. But when Robyn saves a wild native girl, Mebh, their friendship leads her to discover the world of the Wolfwalkers and transform her into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy.” A 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes is proof that this is a must-watch.

Calvary (2014)

“An honest and good-hearted priest (Brendan Gleeson) wrestles with a cynical, spiteful community after he receives a death threat from an unknown parishioner.” A drama with dark comedy perfect for a Paddy’s Day movie.

The Snapper (1993)

A true timeless classic that we’re sure you’ve all seen plenty of times. So why not revisit it this March?

Intermission (2003)

Intermission is part crime thriller, part romance, with a little bit of comedy thrown in. A perfect film to wine and dine with on Paddy’s night.

Ondine (2010)

Us Irish are known for our mystical past, so this film is a great way to explore those theories. A fisherman catches a woman in his nets who his daughter believes is a mythical selkie. Could she be right?

The Hole in the Ground (2019)

In 2019, the highest-grossing Irish movie was this horror flick and one we’d definitely recommend. But remember,  don’t watch this one alone!

Michael Collins (1996)

This one’s a no brainer. The fantastic story of Michael Collins, played by Liam Neeson, is one that should never stop being heard.
