From modest beginnings on the streets of post-war Derry to the summit of the global charts as an artist and composer for the likes of Luke Kelly, Cliff Richard, Sandie Shaw and Elvis Presley, Phil has been a towering presence on the world music stage for 60 years and remains one of Ireland’s best-loved and iconic music figures.
Phil, what song do you have on repeat at the minute?
Tennessee Whiskey by Chris Stapleton, a banger of a country song. It was written back in 1981 but is enjoying an amazing rebirth with a bunch of new recordings, proving that a good song never goes away.
What’s your feel-good track, your serotonin boost?
You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling by the Righteous Brothers, written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil with Phil Spector. It may date from 1964 but it’s still a classic and a master class in production.
What do you listen to when in a mood?
I often return to my classical past in moments of serious reflection. A choral version of Lux Aeterna from Elgar’s Nimrod, sung by Voces 8, is profoundly beautiful and has a very calming effect.
What artist are you loving at the moment?
I was fascinated by the TG4 series Blath na h-Oige, featuring young Sean-Nós singers from around the country. They are all brilliant, every one of them, but I really like Piaras O Lorcain.
What did you listen to growing up?
I was really fortunate that in my teenage years pop music took a leap forward, away from twee pop songs like How Much is that Doggie in the Window?, with the arrival of rock n roll. My small, beat-up wireless was permanently tuned to Radio Luxembourg and a diet of Fats Domino, Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee Lewis. Glory days!
Best concert you’ve ever been to?
Some years back I was invited to a concert in an indoor arena in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, by The Eagles, featuring all the original members. The band were brilliant, their harmonies polished and one song was bigger and better than the last. When, as an encore, Don Henley sang Desperado it was almost a spiritual experience. Goosebumps!
