Snow Patrol’s lead singer Gary Lightbody opened up about his experience with comedian Stephen Merchant and how it left him, “completely decimated”
Speaking to Sunday Life, the musician opened up about a time he tried to embrace his Rockstar image and bought himself a leather jacket, but when he donned it for the first time, he received a jab from Stephen, who said; “All right! Mad Max has arrived.”
Explaining how it hurt, Gary said; “He just completely buried me in front of everybody.”
“The one and only time I had any rock-star confidence about me was completely decimated in the space of a few words.
“My one dalliance with rock’n’roll behaviour, never to be repeated.”
The singer also opened up about the band’s struggles before making it big in the music industry.
Confessing he was dropped from a record label and forced to take a job in a call center. But the job only lasted two days, explaining; “That’s how useful I am to society when you take the guitar away from me.”
But despite facing challenges like this, the group persevered, and eventually made it big in the music scene.
Which was a big adjustment for the band. As Gary explained; “We were just very aware that this could be taken away from us at any time and that, in fact, it — the success — might be a mistake. I was waiting for someone to tap me on the shoulder and say, ‘Actually, sorry, it’s not supposed to be you guys, so if you could just move out of the way that’d be great.’”
“You’re never fully cocksure, or confident. So you’ll find no footage of me entering a room like, say, Conor McGregor.”
