Shay Given appeared on Goals on Sunday today, and revealed his Donegal mates hilarious reaction to an infamous goalkeeping blunder he made in his early career.
The former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper was asked about the incident, which saw him make an error to allow in an easy goal when he was playing for Newcastle.
“I’ve got a goal and an assist there, I’ll tell you what, that’s worth 50 million in today’s market.” Shay joked with the shows hosts Chris Kamara and Ben Shepard.
“Kenny was obviously fuming at the time but at the same time the next week he was like ‘Ok forget about it’.
“I learned from it of course as a goalkeeper. It never happened before, and what people don’t realise is that a month before the six-second rule came in. So I couldn’t hold it in my hand for more than six seconds so I just chucked it down and didn’t look behind me.
“Obviously Dion Dublin was with his mates in the crowd and thought ‘Oh this looks good’ and came on and scored.”
Shay then went on to tell of the slagging’s he got from his friends home in Donegal.
“Of course the joke is that I’m the only Irish man not to know where Dublin is.
“Some of my friends in Donegal bought me a wing mirror. They said next time you play can you bring that on the pitch” he laughed.
“Killing me like, but yeah you do learn from your mistakes.”
We’re sure Shay wants to forget about this one as soon as possible!
