I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! 2020 star Shane Richie has admitted to being ‘literally skint’ before entering the reality TV show, revealing that the pandemic had a bigger impact on his family’s finances than he anticipated.
Opening up to the UK Mirror ahead of going into the castle. Shane said that he was forced to borrow money from friends and family, and sell his car in order to get by.
“I was going on tour, doing a TV series and panto but it all got canceled in March. Now I am literally skint!” he said.
Admitting that although he had savings put aside in case of an emergency, Shane said that he never anticipated being out of work for so long due to the pandemic.
“You save for a rainy day but you don’t expect the rainy day to last eight months,” he continued.
“Thankfully, I’ve been able to borrow money from mates, my family and the bank… and my wife is now very happy we can finally pay off the credit card!”
“I got rid of my car, but only ‘cos I lease a car for my wife for the kids on the school run and I got rid of my car ‘cos it was too much money and we only needed one car. I can get around on a moped.”
The Eastenders star also went on to say that although times are hard, he is always willing to grind in order to provide for his family, admitting that he’ll turn his hand to anything if needs be, including stand-up comedy.
“I am alright, I have had a career and if it all finishes tomorrow so be it, if the worst comes to the worst, I’ll go out and do stand up or find something to do, I’ll resurrect a musical.”
Last night saw Shane and fellow campmate Jacob take on the first trial of the I’m A Celebrity series, dubbed ‘The Viper Vault’. Before heading into the vault full of snakes host Ant told Shane that he received the most votes to take part in the trial, with Shane joking that ‘half of Dublin’ wanted to see him do this trial, along with Coronation Street fans.
“I’ve got a big family in Ireland, they’ll have emptied the account and I think Coronation Street fans” he said.
