As we enter into the festive time of the year, it can be extremely easy to fall into a slippery slope of overconsumption.
Shops are slowly filling each shelf with festive decorations. And it’s definitely tempting. Of course, I want my bedroom to smell like a winter wonderland. But is it worth its short relevancy? How can you get in the seasonal mood while staying sustainable and eco-conscious?
Avoid the cheesy patterns
When buying decorations or any home decor, you probably want to match it to the time of year. However, by sticking to a more minimalist but still on-theme approach you can get the best of both worlds.
For example, rather than buying a Christmas-themed candle with Santa hats on it, that won’t be relevant after the 25th of December, opt for a plain winter shade such as burgundy with a smell which can be used throughout the other colder months as well.
DIY it
There are tons of ways to make your own decorations at home with supplies that you probably already have. This is a great way to be more sustainable and recycle items you already bought that might end up in the bin otherwise.
Pinterest has so many great ideas and tutorials on how to get creative this year. Each item will also be completely personal and it’s something fun to do!
Avoid impulse buys
A great way to figure out if you really want something is to avoid impulse buying. Rather than purchasing an item straight away, give it a few days.
If it’s still on your mind why not treat yourself, it’s a sign that you genuinely really want it. More often than not, you might not think of that item ever again, which goes to show you never really wanted or needed it in the first place! This will also help you avoid overspending.
Thrift it
Thrift shops and charity shops are sure to be filled with second-hand seasonal decor. You might get lucky and be able to pick up a few hidden gems. This is a great way to be sustainable this year and reduce the environmental impact of seasonal shopping. You will also save yourself a few quid, sounds like a win-win situation!
Gift experiences
One of the most meaningful ways to give this holiday season can be through experiences. Rather than buying someone something materialistic why not opt for something like an activity, a trip away or a concert ticket?
Experiences will create unforgettable memories that can’t compare to an item and it is also a great way to cut down on your waste this year.
