Ryan Tubridy has shared his heartfelt well-wishes with Vicky Phelan, as she has moves to America for cancer treatment.
Vicky was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2014 and as new tumours have continued to appear and grow, she decided to join a cancer trial in the US, leaving her loved ones behind for six months.
Speaking to listeners on RTE Radio One today Ryan said, “Thank you for knocking on doors and not taking no for an answer, because a lot of us would have said ‘No? Okay.’ But Vicky keeps going.
“She hopped on a plane yesterday, on her own, to Maryland in America to have a throw of the dice in terms of a clinical trial to see if she can do it.
“God knows America is not the place you want to visit at the moment. She leaves her kids and partner behind. She is remarkable.”
Vicky revealed it wasn’t an easy decision to make, but believes it’s best for her family in the long run if it prolongs her life.
“Even though I don’t want to be away from my kids, I’m torn. I rationalise things by saying, ‘It’s short-term pain for long-term gain’.
“If this trial works, I get more time with my kids. They understand it, I’ve been very open and honest with my kids from the very beginning,” she said on the Late Late Show on Friday night.
“If it doesn’t work Ryan, I have no regrets. What I’m scared of most is not coming back or coming back in a coffin.
“That’s why I’m getting upset about leaving because you don’t know if I’m going to come back, that is the worry.”
We wish Vicky the very best of luck.
