Ryan Tubridy has opened up about the axing of Eurosong, admitting that he had absolutely no idea the show wouldn’t be returning this year.
For the past number of years the RTE presenter has hosted the show which selects Ireland’s entry for the Eurovision, but this year things have been changed up.
Nicky Byrne was chosen to sing for Ireland this year, and despite being out of the loop, Ryan thinks it was a good choice.
Speaking on his RTE Radio One show, Ryan said, “I only found out about this like everyone else. I wasn’t in the loop on this, but it’s the right thing to do.
“There’s a perfectly formed pop star. He’ll be brilliant with the press. He’ll be brilliant internationally.”
Ryan understands that Eurosong fun and exciting, but knows that if Ireland wants to win the overall show, something had to change.
He said, “For the last seven years, every year we do the Eurosong special and I love doing it, and it was great fun and a distraction from the regular type of show we do, but it just didn’t yield the type of results we required.
“It didn’t yield the right results, and something had to change.”
Well let’s hope this is the year that it happens!
