We sat down with Louise Cooney as she’s planning her big day, getting back into working life and juggling motherhood.
Louise, how’s life?
Life is good! Things are probably busier than ever but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I have lots of amazing things going on around me and a lot to look forward to this year. Between Jude growing up, us getting married, my sister having a baby, it feels like a new chapter of life and I’m really enjoying this era.
And of course, a brand new season of your podcast, Open Book, has just been released too!
Yes! This series is all about learning from our guests, being open minded, curious and asking questions. It’s got something for everyone whether you just want to laugh and switch off, learn how to plan a wedding, or better manage your finances. We really do cover a lot of ground!
Between work, wedding planning and the adorable baby Jude, it’s all go, so how do you like to take some time for yourself to switch off?
It’s about finding moments of calm amongst the chaos. Those ten minutes after I put Jude to bed in the evening are pure bliss! My morning gym class – whenever I can make it – feels like a luxury now. And honestly a bit of me-time in the car or on a walk while listening to a good podcast, I just love it.

Are you watching anything good on the telly at the moment?
I’m not, I’m afraid! In the summer months, I always get more into reading.
So you escape into books. What are your current faves?
I recently finished Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid and loved that! I’m also enjoying Dermot Whelan’s Busy & Wrecked. I’ve learned so much from him about slowing down and enjoying the simple things.
As a podcaster yourself, what others do you enjoy?
I really love RTÉ’s Doc on One podcasts, they’re full of true crime and lots of Irish history. They’re incredibly well researched! Another one I love for switching off is Shameless. It’s an Aussie podcast and they are hilarious. Their tagline is “for smart people who love dumb things” and I feel that sums it up well!
Tell us about a typical evening at home, how do you unwind before bed?
This is something I could definitely get better at as I’m guilty of doom-scrolling! I am pretty good at routine when it comes to bedtime though and I usually try to leave a little time for journalling or reading once I’m up there!
And then first thing in the morning, how do you kick off the day?
I jump up and get myself ready as soon as possible because as soon as Jude’s up – which is usually not long after – it gets a little more tricky! I get him ready for the day, we have some breakfast, playtime and out the door!
What are you most thankful for in life?
My family and friends, without a doubt!

Who would you say has made the biggest impact on your life?
Jude, my 20-month-old son. I think I’m showing and teaching him things, but then I realise how much he’s opened my eyes and taught me… it’s pretty wild!
What’s been your proudest personal moment?
Becoming a mom, and some of the work I’ve done for charities over the years because I know the positive impact that can have.
And professional?
I’ve had lots of professional moments that I’m proud of, I’ve worked with incredible brands, travelled to places I didn’t think I’d ever get to go to and have launched my own businesses. But in this new season of life as a mom, coming back with the podcast in our third season is huge. I’m so excited for all that’s to come and just really hope its something that can help people.
Tell us, what are your hopes for the future?
For myself, right now I’m really looking forward to our wedding. I hope we get to celebrate that with all of our nearest and dearest in the way we’ve planned. I hope Jude continues to grow as the happy, healthy boy he is, and I hope to keep working away and juggling it all!
