LeanMeanMomma's Pinwheels

Kids return to school this Monday after the midterm break, and so it’s time to think about lunchboxes and what to pack for your youngster.

Finding a balance between a lunchbox that is both nutritious and colourful is a challenge that every parent is faced with at one stage or other.

According to Food and Drink Federation, children’s recommended daily allowance is 24g protein, 220g carbohydrates, and a variety of other nutrients including sugar, fat, saturates, fibre and salt.

Making a well-balanced lunch doesn’t have to be hard, and can be achieved using simple products such as yogurts and small pots of fruit to go alongside sandwiches. The trick is to capture your child’s imagination with eye-catching and inventive ways of trying new foods.

That’s where Homebird Pinwheels comes in.

Homebird FR-1534-2

The advantage of making pinwheels (besides the fact that they look great) is you can pop different flavours of wraps into the lunchbox of each child to encourage them to try something new. They are also quick and simple and can be made with Homebird’s ready to serve chicken and turkey.

Here’s how to make them for your little ones:

Ingredients:

1 pack Homebird Traditional Irish Roast Chicken Slices cocktail sticks/lollipop sticks
1 sandwich/tortilla wrap
spinach leaves
sliced cheese
mayonnaise or cream cheese

Method:

Spread the wrap with mayo/cream cheese.
Lay the rest of the ingredients on the wrap and roll lengthways.
Slice into 2-3 inch pieces and secure with a cocktail stick. Mix and match 2 or 3 flavour combo’s per lunchbox.

Homebird is Ireland’s first and only Bord Bia approved Irish sliced chicken and turkey and is available in supermarkets nationwide in 90g and 100g for €3.00.
