Oliver Callan has made his feelings about Barack Obama and his wife Michelle very clear. Not holding back, the comedian has been extremely vocal about his feelings surrounding the former president’s impending visit to Ireland, and the fact that he’s set to be awarded with the Freedom of Dublin.
Speaking in his column in the Irish Sun, Oliver calls out the Dublin City Council is wasting enormous amounts of money on Barack’s 2011 visit, and the extortionate funds that are expected to be spent on his upcoming 2017 trip.
In fact, despite backlash from citizens, Oliver feels that it should be US President Donald Trump who visits our country this year, and not the Obama’s at all.
“Obama is infuriating because his rhetoric promised so much and delivered so little. His failure smashed all our hopes of change through liberal values. He is, and will always be to so many of us, a symbol of disappointment.
“Ireland should be better than this. We should be proud of our ability to judge people on their contribution to the betterment of society, not this empty and pointless sort of undeserved hero-worship.
“The invite to Dublin will only serve to antagonise President Trump, who is pointedly not being invited to Ireland, even though he will be in the UK next October.
“With Ireland facing a tough Brexit negotiation over its borders, we need all the allies we can get, even if you don’t like them. It’s the 45th President we should invite to Ireland, not the 44th,” he said.
