After the final episode of hit tv show Normal People aired last night, fans have been taking to Twitter to share their reactions, with many asking for a second season of the show. Now, Lenny Abrahamson, director of the show, has confirmed that, despite its worldwide success, there are no plans to continue Marianne and Connell’s story.
He mentioned that while there are no plans in place right now, he isn’t ruling out returning to the character’s stories in the future.
He said: “I think the straight answer is, in a way it’s the end of the story. That’s where Sally [Rooney] left it in the book.”
“It feels like the complete cut when you finish the novel. Having said that, in terms of the story and what it says about the characters, it is open.”
He continued to say, “there’s no plan at all for a second season in a traditional sense of ‘let’s just pick up where we left off in the first season’ but we always talked about the fact that it would be lovely to know where these characters were in the next five to 10 years. So, who knows? But as of now, no.”
Speaking to Ian Dempsey on Today FM, Abrahamson stated he thinks that the current lockdown may have added to the emotional response to the show. “Probably something to do with the lockdown maybe makes people that bit more open emotionally or the themes of intimacy, that aspect of it means something in these circumstances particularly.”
“Whether you’re that age and you’re going through it or whether you’re a bit older and you remember it, it is those first strong feelings that you have as you’re becoming an adult, that first relationship you have, also the experience of leaving where you’re from. These are things that are very universal.”
