Nicky Byrne shares why he would love to make a return to radio

Almost everything Nicky Byrne turns his hand to is a success, from being in the biggest Irish boy band of all time to his effortless presenting skills, we’re happy to see him on stage or on TV!

There was a time when the Westlife star was also a regular on the radio with a show on 2FM, and it seems he hasn’t ruled out a return to the airwaves at some point.

At the launch of his new talent show for RTE he said; “It did cross my mind more than ever during lockdown.”

During lockdown he shared that he loved working from home on Westlife’s new album but it did make him consider returning to radio at some point.

Reflecting on his time at 2FM he said; “When I left 2FM I was broken hearted, but it was for the right reasons. It was five years, the Westlife reunion was imminent and that was going to take me all over the world for a long time and it did for the guts of the year but when were supposed to do the second leg, Covid put a stop to it.”

As the band plan on getting back on the road again as soon as they can to continue that tour it means any chance of him rekindling his love for radio is still on the back burner for now; “That second leg still has to be done when the time is right. We’ve a new album with lots of gigs. We’re looking at 70 shows when the world is open, which will take the guts of a year to do.”

“Radio, I do want to get back to it, but it won’t be this year or next year,” he added.

Chatting about why it’s a medium he loves so much, Nicky shared that it’s because t provides a regular routine unlike most of his other jobs throughout the years.

“What I loved about radio was the consistency of it all, the live aspect and yes you can go in and do a show here and there and it’ll be fine, but you won’t reinvent the wheel or create something new, so when I do go back, it’ll be for a minimum of two or three years to really make a stab at it again and do it right.”

“By then, I’m not sure what age I’ll be so I don’t know where I’ll suit. 2FM is getting younger and younger so maybe I’ll have to look to Radio1!”
