Newstalk’s Ciara Kelly gets mammogram live on air to promote breast cancer awareness

Newstalk presenter Dr Ciara Kelly had a mammogram live on air this week, in a bid to promote breast cancer awareness and the importance of checking your breasts.

The presenter attended Breast Check, the national breast cancer screening service in St Vincent’s Hospital and documented the process for listeners.

Ahead of the test, she revealed, “I’ve never had a mammogram before. I’m slightly nervous but not too bad.”

However this feeling didn’t last long, as the healthcare staff quickly put her mind at ease.

“They couldn’t have been nicer, from the professor herself down to the radiographer, Aoife, everyone was lovely,” she said afterwards.

“[It was] much less daunting than I thought. Less painful than I thought too. A small bit of discomfort but no big deal and well worth doing.”

Every year over 3000 women in Ireland are diagnosed with breast cancer, and as the numbers are so high, early detection is vital.

Breast Cancer Ireland revealed some of the key warning signs to look out for, including lumps, unusual swelling, puckering of the skin, or changes in size. Always be sure to consult a medical professional if you notices anything new.
