Michael D. Higgins set to welcome a new pet into the Áras an Uachtaráin

Some good news today, as President Michael D. Higgins is reportedly set to welcome a new pet, in the form of a pony, into the stately home Áras an Uachtaráin.

The Irish public was heartbroken to hear the news in September that one of the president’s beloved dogs, Síoda had passed away after a short illness. Leaving his friend, Bród the Bernese mountain behind. But, it looks like little Bród will have a playmate joining him in his home in a few month’s time.

A new deal between Áras an Uachtaráin and Kylemore Abbey means that a mare will soon be sent to Higgins’ household to graze around and enjoy all of the open land they have to offer.

Kylemore Abbey’s executive director Conor Coyne told The Irish Field said that the pony will be joining Bród and co annually between May and September.

“We had been in contact with the team in the Áras who are in the middle of putting biodiversity grazing strategy on the grounds and we are looking at doing something similar in Kylemore.

“We spoke about possibly sharing some of the animals and offered them a pony and a foal annually from May to September.”
