Laura Whitmore on suffering a miscarriage: “Was I supposed to be upset? Was I supposed to be ok and move on?”

Laura Whitmore has opened up about suffering a miscarriage two years ago, revealing she was unsure of how to react to the news.

In 2018 the Bray native discovered she was expecting a baby with boyfriend Iain Stirling, but when they went for the 12 week scan, learned she sadly miscarried.

Laura admits she didn’t know what she was supposed to say or how to feel when they left the hospital.

Speaking to Katherine Ryan on her podcast Castaway, she said, “We had gone for the scan and there was no heartbeat.”

The pair had tickets to Katherine’s comedy gig that night, and welcoming the distraction, Laura felt it’d be best for them to go.

“I remember Iain saying to me, ‘should we just go home,’ and I said, ‘I can’t. I want to have a little bit of escapism for an hour and I want to laugh and I want to watch a show and then I’ll deal with it.’

“For me, that was so important to see your show.”

In a piece for Hotpress Magazine, Laura previously spoke about how important it is for women to reach out and share their experience with those closest to them.

“Miscarriages happen to 1 in 3 women. I didn’t know this, because most people just don’t talk about it. Now I’m part of that statistic,” she said.

“I hadn’t planned the pregnancy in the first place, so should I be sad? I was. That feeling was heightened because I felt I had to be sad alone: apart from a handful of people, no one knew.”
