Kneecap win big at British Independent Film Awards

Northern Irish film KNEECAP won big last night at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA). 

The movie claimed three major awards for Best British Independent Film, Best Debut Screenwriter for Peppiatt, and Best Joint Lead Performance, awarded to group members Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin, and JJ Ó Dochartaigh. 

The film also previously picked up four additional awards in the craft categories for Best Casting, Best Editing, Best Original Music, and Best Music Supervision.

The film, written and directed by Rich Peppiatt stars Móglaí Bap, Mo Chara and DJ Próvaí, alongside Michael Fassbender, Simone Kirby, Josie Walker, Fionnuala Flaherty, Jessica Reynolds and Adam Best. 

Set in West Belfast in 2019, the film features the trio rapping in the Irish language, creating their own genre of Irish punk rap.

KNEECAP has already picked up some major accolades, including a NEXT Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival, and three prizes including the Audience Award at the Galway Film Festival.

It has also been chosen to represent Ireland in the International Feature Film category at the upcoming 97th annual Academy Awards. 

And deservedly so!
