Boxing champ Katie Taylor, publicly hit out at pro golfers on social media yesterday, as they continue to drop out of the upcoming 2016 Olympics.
Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Shane Lowry have all pulled out of travelling to the Rio Olympics due to the dangers of the zika virus.
Katie, who is competing in the games herself, took to Twitter yesterday, claiming that the golfers are full of excuses. In her tweet she wrote, “Another one bites the dust. I wonder what excuse the golfers would of made if there was no virus.”
Along with the passive-aggressive tweet, Katie posted the statement released by Jason Day, where he explains his reasons for dropping out.
The men all expressed their sadness at not competing in this summer’s competition, but all felt it was too big a risk to take for their families with the zika virus.
Jason’s said that, “It is with deep regret” that he announce his withdrawal from the Summer Olympic Games. “The reason for my decision is my concerns about the possible transmission of the zika virus and the potential risks that it may present to my wife’s future pregnancies and to future members of our family,” he continued.
Padraig Harrington and Seamus Power are now the only two Irish representatives set to take on other international golfers in the competition.
