Irish boxer Katie Taylor earned an impressive victory over her opponent Amanda Serrano, in their historic match held in New York.

Their fight was the first female boxing match to headline Madison Square Garden, and many consider it to be one of the biggest moments in female boxing history. It was also the Irish boxer’s 21st win in her professional career.

The fight was hard won as Katie struggled in the fifth round but made an epic comeback and secured her title as the undisputed lightweight champion, against nine-time world champion Amanda.

Speaking after the match, the Bray boxer shared her delight at winning. Saying; “I think the most important thing is always to come out the winner, regardless of how I perform, tonight was fantastic. I had to dig deep and produce a career-defining performance to actually win.”

She also shared her appreciation for her opponent Amanda. Praising; “What an amazing champion Amanda is, she’s a phenomenal fighter and we definitely got the best out of each other. Coming into this fight, they were saying it was the biggest fight in women’s boxing, but I think it exceeded it.”

As for how this match lines up against the rest of her career, the champion believes it was one of the greatest victories she’s had.

Saying; “It was a special, special moment, the best night of my career.”

“I was not sure if anything could reach my Olympic gold medal moment, but tonight was absolutely the best moment of my career.”

And Katie is already thinking about a rematch against Amanda, hoping this time it could be closer to home.

Explaining; “We all want to see the best versus the best,”

“A rematch would be absolutely phenomenal and if it was in Dublin, we could sell out Croke Park.”

“We saw something special tonight, imagine what could happen in front of 80 or 90 thousand. Absolutely it could happen.”

While promoter Eddie Hearn added; “It would be a great shame if she didn’t get a chance to fight in Ireland during her career, so if we could do that, back end of the summer.”

A massive congratulations to Katie on her historic victory!
