Katherine Lynch has recalled the terrifying moment police held her at gunpoint while holidaying in Bulgaria in the 1990s.
Chatting candidly on RTÉ’s Today Show, the TV personality told the story of when herself and a friend’s trip to Bulgaria went horribly wrong.
“We went to Bulgaria once and it was an absolute disaster, we thought we were going to this really exotic holiday,” she began.
“We arrived to this cheap hotel because we were on a budget, and on the first night the sniffer dogs raided the hotel, it was like a scene from Goodfellas”
“We got into a taxi, the taxi driver was as drunk as a lord with a bottle of whiskey, which was only a pound so it was cheaper than water”
“So he was drinking that and he went up on two wheels on a stump and nearly killed us. My friend knocked his glasses off and we jumped out of the car and ran but he followed us in the car.”

Coming to the end of her story, Katherine explained what happened next:
“We got to the hotel and the guards arrived and they put a gun to my head and I had to give 50 dollars or I would have been deported. It was that corrupt.”
Although Katherine described the ordeal as ‘horrifc’, she says she still manages to see the light side of the event, hailing it as great conversation during a dinner party.
“It was the most valuable holiday of all holidays because every time we have a dinner party we talk about Bulgaria”
