Renowned Irish author Patricia Scanlan has revealed that she’s been diagnosed with cancer following a routine check-up last December.
The bestselling writer, known for her beloved novels such as City Girl and A Time for Friends, shared the news with her readers and followers, expressing gratitude for early detection and the support she has received since.
“It was a bit of a shock,” she told the RTE Guide, before noting how her prognosis is positive.
“It was (December) Friday the 13th.”

Looking back on the timing, she remarked: “It’s just bad timing, with PR duties to fulfil and books to sign.”
Although she was aware of the risks due to her family history, she never imagined she would be the one facing them, saying: “It was just a routine check-up.
“I had a shoulder replacement last February and had to cancel my BreastCheck appointment that month because I couldn’t raise my arm for the x-rays.
“I rescheduled for November, and by December, I got the results. Once I was in the system, everything moved quite quickly — surgery in January, followed by another procedure in early March.”
She then praised the care she has received, adding: “The consultant is being extra careful, and the team at BreastCheck have been wonderful—so kind, so thorough.”
The bestselling author is now set to undergo a course of radiotherapy, but with the cancer detected early, Patricia is remaining positive.
“It’s the waiting for results that is the worst bit,” she noted.
We’re wishing Patricia a speedy recovery,
