Caitríona Balfe is back on the big screen in the high-stakes thriller The Amateur, starring alongside Rami Malek, Rachel Brosnahan, and Laurence Fishburne.
Yes, the Outlander star takes on a complex new role that she describes as a “fun conundrum” to unpack.
While, the story follows a CIA surveillance expert whose wife is killed in a terrorist attack in London, prompting him to track down her killers.
Known for bringing depth and nuance to her characters, Balfe plays Malek’s widowed partner-in-crime, Inquiline.

“As the female population is full of all sorts and kinds, then we have to show all of that. And even though she’s [Inquiline] doing these very extraordinary things, she’s still, I would say, a very vulnerable person.
“And that’s what I really liked about her. It’s that she’s not just invincible or has this sort of bravado.
“She’s very delicate in many ways but found a way to protect herself. It’s important to show all of these kind of things on screen.”
Reflecting on the one quality she admires most in Inquiline, the Irish actress said it has to be her survival instinct.
“I don’t think I could have done that, especially knowing what and who she’s up against.
“I would also love just one little piece of her technical skills because I am useless,” she added.
You can catch The Amateurs in cinemas this Friday.
