There was widespread shock when news broke of Imelda May’s long-term marriage breakdown, and her “deeply religious” parents are said to be devastated over the split.
The singer announced her marriage to Darrel Hignan, who she wed in 2002, is over via Facebook on Friday, stunning fans of the pair who perform together on stage.
“My husband Darrel and I have split up. As you can imagine, we are very sad but we’re happy it’s the right decision for us and our daughter who is doing really well by the way,” she wrote.
Now, close pal Gay Byrne, has opened up about the unexpected split, admitting he’s as shocked as anyone else.
“I’m amazed because Imelda was with Darrel so long,” he said. “I thought they had everything sorted out and this really is out of the blue.”
The RTE legend also told The Irish Sun that Imelda’s deep faith will help her get through the breakup, after 13 years together.
“Imelda is quite religious and would stop off at a church to pray,” he explained. “Her mother and father are quite religious too and beautiful people.”
Gay added: “It’s this deep Catholic faith Imelda has which means she will take the end of her marriage very seriously.
“It will be the same for her parents who I’m sure will be devastated by this.”
