It’s no secret that Imelda May has totally revamped her look recently. Although her old look was quite distinctive, it was super cool. She’s now revealed to Graham Norton why she ditched her signature quiff for longer locks and a fringe.
As the Dubliner embarked on a new album, she decided she was done being boxed into a certain category with her sense of style, in music and fashion. She was ready for a change, and a drastic one at that.
When chatting on his BBC radio show Graham said, “You’re unrecognisable, you look so different because the hair is all down now and there’s no gingham.” Imelda then told the host about her process of what she felt was coming back to her roots.
“I did a big clear out. I got rid of almost everything.. Yes it was (a very distinctive look), and that’s why I wanted to stop. Because who wants to do that you know, I didn’t want to have a little box around me that ‘you must look like this.’
“It just didn’t feel good after a while that I had to dress up as me. And as you get older you just change and I wanted to go out and buy things that I felt like buying without it being in that little box.
“I still love all that, I love that look but I just needed to shake everything off and start again. I just needed a fresh start,” she said.
Not only with her look, but the Mayhem singer was ready for a change when it came to her sound too. Her new album, Life Love Flesh Blood, sounds very different to her previous stuff.
“The whole thing felt right, and song writing and everything I just wanted to not know what I was doing…I just wanted to go with the flow,” she said.
