Imelda May has opened up about her music journey, revealing that she was told she was ‘wasting her time’ making music in her 40s.

After releasing her most recent album last week, Imela revealed that she was “on a mission” to get the album to number one to prove those who doubted her wrong.

Sharing a video on Twitter, Imelda said, “Hi, I have some news. First of all, not so long ago I was told by a few people in the industry that as a woman over 40, I was wasting my time and that no one would be interested.

“I went ahead with it anyway, and now it looks like I am very close to Number One in Ireland and very close to top five in the UK.”

She continued, “So, I’m now on a mission for not just me, but for all of us. If you’re thinking of getting the album anyway, please do it now. I have until Wednesday night, I think, or early Thursday morning, to go for it.

“I’d bloody love that, I really would. So, downloads and physical albums count. Streams do too, but more so downloads and physical albums. And all the physical albums, I have a little surprise for you. So game on, let’s do this!”

Imelda also captioned the video: “Not so long ago I was told by people in the music industry that as I was a woman over 40 yrs of age I was wasting my time still making music. I forged ahead with it regardless, and made ’11 past the hour’… I just got told I am very close to #1 in Ireland and top 5 in the U.K!!!!”

Fans and followers flocked to the comments to praise and congratulate Imelda, with one writing, “Absolutely brilliant news! Downloading immediately”, another commented “Well done Imelda a good song is a good song !!! Age shouldn’t even come into it. Keep bringing out them hits”, while another shared a photo of Imelda’s vinyl, with the caption “It’s a great album. Got my vinyl copy on Friday.”
