“I cried”: Caitríona Balfe on her full-circle moment with Sinéad O’Connor

Caitríona Balfe has opened up about how emotional she became when she found out that Sinéad O’Connor would be singing the Outlander theme tune.

Not to mention getting the chance to be featured on an album alongside her!

Speaking on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the Irish actress admitted that growing up, Sinéad had always been an icon for her.

“When they told me, I cried because she’s this icon in my life and I grew up idolising her,” she said.

“And then during that season, I had to sing…I am not a natural singer,” she revealed.

Despite her nerves, Kelly was full of praise, pointing out just how technically and emotionally demanding the performance was, and complimenting the richness of her voice.

“I am so jealous of you. You have such a beautiful alto voice.”

The piece in question was “Ave Maria”, a song even experienced vocalists approach with caution.

Caitríona also reflected on how a music teacher once knocked her confidence, telling her not to worry, as everyone has their own talents, something that led her to step away from singing for years.

So when she was asked to sing for the show, she couldn’t believe it!

“But singing on that was such a breakthrough, breaking through fear,” she shared.

“And then the cherry on top of everything was that I was on an album with Sinéad O’Connor. How cool is that?”

Very cool indeed.
