Hair is one of the most important factors people consider when looking at their appearance. Our hair can feel more important to us than makeup, it shapes our appearance and our confidence.

When you are suffering from thinning hair or hair loss, it can be difficult to wrap your head around this drastic change of appearance.

Many will turn to hair extensions or wigs, and if that reinstills your confidence, of course, continue down that route. However, if you’re looking for a natural, less damaging route to take there are many steps and tips you can take to grow your natural hair in length and in thickness.

There are many types of treatments you can consider when looking to grow your natural hair. Some people choose hair transplants and laser therapy; however, they’re not always budget-friendly.

One of the simple tips you can include in your day-to-day that will improve your hair care routine is eating a balanced diet, especially one rich in protein, vitamin A and biotin which all promote the growth of keratin within the body.

Another simple tip you could include is wearing low tension hairstyles. It’s important to not put your under too much pressure in hairstyles like slick backs and high buns and to focus on low tension hairstyles as they will minimise the stress your hair is under and reduce hair breakage.

Another major factor to consider is your nighttime routine. By sleeping on satin or silk pillows or with a satin bonnet or turban over your hair, you will reduce the risk of hair breakage.

Traditional pillowcases are made from cotton blends, which is very harsh on your hair and will most likely cause tension and breakage by drying out your hair.

It can be difficult to choose which hair oil you should be using, should you be massaging your scalp or taking vitamins to help promote keratin growth?

Irish brand Annutri has the country’s leading range of natural hair growth vitamins. The brand was founded by Anita Donoghue in 2020 after she had suffered hair loss due to pregnancy. Anita launched Grow It, a supplement for hair health that promotes natural hair growth.

When Anita was asked what she considered to be the most beneficial tips for someone trying to start their hair care journey, she told us: “At Annutri, we believe healthy hair starts from within and consistency is key.

Nourish from the Inside. Hair needs essential nutrients like Zinc, Copper, and B-Vitamins to grow strong and healthy. Our Grow It supplement supports hair from within, promoting growth and reducing shedding.”

She went on to say:  “Be Gentle and Hydrate. Over-washing, excessive heat, and tight hairstyles can weaken hair. Keeping hair hydrated and using nourishing oils helps prevent breakage. Stay Consistent and Patient. Hair growth takes time. A healthy routine and the right products will lead to stronger, healthier hair in the long run.”

Annutri’s products contain natural ingredients that are vegan-friendly, which was an important factor for Anita when setting up her brand.

When asked are natural ingredients more beneficial for hair growth she told us: “Harsh chemicals can strip the scalp, cause inflammation, and weaken hair over time, whereas natural ingredients support follicle health by reducing irritation and build up, extend the growth phase of hair, strengthening it at the root and balance scalp sebum production, keeping hair hydrated without excess oil.”

With so much false information on the internet, it can be difficult to figure out what actually works when it comes to hair growth and what is just trending.

Anita feels that some of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to grow their hair include neglecting scalp health, overprocessing their hair, ignoring nutrition and lack of consistency.

“The scalp is the foundation of hair growth. If it’s not nourished, hair won’t thrive. Not Addressing Stress and Hormonal Changes Teffluvium (temporary shedding from stress, postpartum changes, or illness) is common,” she explains.

“Frequent heat styling, bleaching, and chemical treatments weaken hair and cause breakage. There are also deficiencies in B-Vitamins, Zinc, or Iron that can slow growth and lead to thinning. Supplements like Grow It help fill these gaps. Hair takes time to grow. A steady routine, proper nutrition, and patience are key for long-term results.”

There’s a lot of talk about hair care tips about scalp health but how important is looking after your scalp when trying to grow your hair?

“Scalp care is essential for healthy hair growth. A balanced, nourished scalp ensures follicles receive oxygen and nutrients, preventing shedding, inflammation, and build up.

“Key benefits of proper scalp care include: Improving circulation, helping follicles stay in the growth phase longer. Balancing sebum production, preventing dryness or excess oil. Reducing scalp inflammation, which can hinder hair growth.”
