How to clean outdoors this autumn

As summer fades and the days grow shorter, autumn is the ideal time to give your outdoor spaces and windows a seasonal refresh.

Here are Luke Joyce’s, Founder and MD of TheCleaningCompany.ie,  ThePaintingCompany.ie and TheDrivewayGuys.ie, top tips to help keep your home looking clean, bright, and ready for the months ahead.

Crystal-clear windows before the clocks change

With daylight hours decreasing, it’s worth making the most of every bit of natural light. Clean your windows using warm water with a few drops of washing-up liquid. Wash with a sponge, then dry using a microfibre cloth or scrunched-up newspaper for a streak-free shine.

Clear gutters before the leaves fall

Early autumn is the perfect moment to inspect and clear out gutters before falling leaves create blockages. Use a ladder, gloves, and a small trowel to remove moss and debris, then flush with a garden hose to ensure water flows freely. If weeds or small plants are sprouting, it’s definitely time for a clean-up.

Power wash patios and paths

After a busy summer, patios, decking, and garden paths often look a bit grimy. A thorough power wash will remove dirt, algae, and stains, restoring a clean finish. Be sure to clear moss as well. It can become dangerously slippery in wet weather.

Tidy your exterior before winter sets in

Autumn’s mild, dry spells are ideal for a general exterior tidy. Sweep driveways, trim hedges, and clear away summer plants from pots and beds. If your exterior paintwork is faded or chipped, now is a good time for touch-ups before the weather turns too damp for painting.

Keep up regular maintenance

Staying on top of small jobs now prevents bigger issues later. Luke recommends a quick monthly check: wipe down windows, check gutters for build-up, sweep paths, and look for signs of wear. A bit of regular attention helps your home stay presentable and weather-ready throughout the season.

TOP TIP: Avoid cleaning in direct sunlight, which causes water to dry too quickly and leave streaks.
