Ahead of the announcement of RTE’s brand new breakfast show, show bosses were keen to keep it underwraps and asked Doireann Garrihy, Carl Mullan and Donnacha O’Callghan to do everything to ensure this secret remained private.
While Doireann and Carl understood the brief, it went over Donnacha’s head.
The trio met in RTE on Monday morning for the announcement, but presenter Carl admits Donnacha almost blew their cover and could have ruined the surprise before they were able to announce it on air.
“We were told that we had to come to RTÉ for the announcement being made, but we couldn’t be seen by anyone. We had to just come and hide somewhere,” he said.
They agreed to meet in RTE’s carpark, but Donnacha was running slightly behind schedule and went to the RTE radio studio instead.
“Literally, the one place on planet earth that he should not have been, he was there,” Carl said.
He was told to go find them and be ‘as secretive as possible’ but again, didn’t really stick to the plan.
Once he finally decided to join them in the carpark, Doireann and Carl couldn’t control their laughter as he sauntered across in a bright red hat.
“Where’s Wally? Where’s f**king Wally? He’s there,” Doireann gasped.
“Look the big red f**king hat,” Carl said, while Doireann shouted, “Incognito, my hole!”
In between chuckles, Carl added, “We’re in this Love/Hate car park so we don’t get seen and look at him!”
The trio kick off their new show on Monday morning and can’t wait to get started.
Sharing her delight, Doireann Garrihy said, “I can’t wait to get on air with Donnacha and Carl. It’s a brand-new show with a brand-new sound and feel.
“We’ve had endless craic while plotting over the past few weeks and I just know that our listeners will love it.”
Carl Mullan said,”I’m absolutely buzzing to be part of the brand new 2FM breakfast show with my pals Doireann and Donncha.
“I joined the station back in 2013, fresh out of college and since then this has always been the dream gig. We’re so excited to bring loads of laughs and all-around good vibes to start everyone’s day.”
Donnacha O’Callaghan added, “It’s going to be incredible craic teaming up with Doireann & Carl and the fantastic breakfast team.
“I am a positive early bird by nature and can’t wait to help create some real feel-good radio. Massively grateful to all the team for the opportunity.”
