Healthkick with Lorraine Keane

We sat down with Lorraine Keane to pick up some health tips.

Self care means to me…

Women in Ireland generally are not great at self-care or at least guilt-free self-care. We need to stop feeling guilty for taking care of ourselves. We don’t think twice about caring for everyone else. Rest, recharge, mind yourself and stop feeling bad about it.

The best health advice I ever got was…

Just move. Get out in the fresh air. Take the stairs not the lift. Incorporate exercise into everyday things where possible – it all adds up. It’s about forming good habits, really. I have started thinking about my future bone health and muscle mass. With the right exercise and right nutrients, minerals and vitamins in our diet we can live longer and stronger.

The biggest lesson I’ve had lately…

Listen to your body. If you are tired, rest, there’s no point in pounding the pavements or counting calories to lose weight, our bodies change after 50 and that’s normal. Eat more protein, exercise less aerobically but do more focused weight-bearing exercise and make sure you have Omega 3 in your diet every day.

The mantra I live by…

Be grateful. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Perfect is so overrated…if it even exists.

The supplement I swear by…

Cleanmarine MenoMin, I have taken this clinically proven supplement for 10 years now since I started perimenopause and it’s honestly a life saver. My mood and energy depend on those two capsules every morning.

The biggest challenge I’ve faced…

Not having wine Monday to Thursday! Why can wine not be considered one of your five a day?! Grape juice?! No?!

The life hack that saves me…

I have been a bit of a sun worshipper my whole life – I just love a tan and feeling heat on my bones – so I should be like a prune at this stage of my life but I think what has saved me is using an SPF on my face every day and a moisturiser on my body every day after my shower, too. I created my own gradual tan that’s also an ultra-hydrating, skin conditioning moisturiser which means I can now be tanned all year round without that yucky fake tan smell. Decadence by Lorraine Keane is also streak-free and wears off naturally not patchy.

My wellbeing bible is…

Throwing myself into the freezing cold Irish sea all year round and walking my dogs in nature.

My menopausal journey…

is changing and evolving all the time. Knowledge is key. I educate myself as much as I can so I can stay on top of my symptoms.

My great escape…

is anywhere to the sunshine. I actually think I’m a solar panel, not a human! When I get sunlight, I honestly feel recharged. Better than any massage or treatment for my wellbeing.

My plan is…

to live my best life by looking after my current and future bone, heart and cognitive health so I live longer and stronger.
