We met 90s popstar Samantha Mumba for her first EVER mother and baby shoot with daughter Sage for this month’s magazine – and check out how cute this behind the scenes clip is!
These days Samantha is living in LA with husband Torray Scales, and six month old baby Sage: A far cry from the seventeen year old singer, eagerly about to enter the music business, that we sat down with in The Herbert Park Hotel in the year 2000.
In an exclusive interview the singer told us about how she partnered up with Louis Walsh to launch her music career, her close relationship with her mother, and her hopes for the future.
At the time of the interview the Dublin teenager was just about to release her first single, Gotta Tell Ya.
We asked her about how she was discovered and linked up with music manager, Louis Walsh. At fifteen Samantha was spotted by Louis when she was starring in a panto. Following this she persuaded her mom to let her go to Lillies Bordello, the place to be at the time. While there she met Louis once again and they exchanged numbers, and the rest is history as they say!
Not only did Samantha’s mom, Bairbre, give her permission to go to Lillies that night, at the tender age of fifteen, but she even went with her! She also supported her daughters decision to leave school and follow her dream to be a singer. Samantha called her mother her best friend at the time of the interview.
“Yes, we’re more like best friends as oppossed to mother and daughter. Of course, she plays the mother role and always looks out for my best interests, but, at the same time, I can tell her everything,” she said.
When we asked Samantha what her hopes for the future were she said that she wanted to “still be doing what I’m doing now because I am loving it so much at the moment.”
Not only did she continue with her music career, but the pop star also broke into acting.
Also looking back on our 2004 interview with Samantha we were reminded of the Steven Spielberg film, The Time Machine, in which Samantha starred. At that time also, the then 21 year old was considering a move to LA, the place she now calls home.
Nowadays, Samantha is playing mommy to her adorable daughter and getting back to the music. She has also recently been back in Ireland, introducing Sage to her family, and featuring in our latest edition of VIP Magazine.
