Paul Mescal has been seen for the first time in costume on the set of Gladiator II.

The Irish actor plays the role of Lucius Verus, the now grown-up son of Lucilla and nephew of Commodus, who Connie Nielsen and Joaquin Phoenix played in the first film.

Connie will be reprising her role in the sequel and is among the few original cast members to appear.

The film also stars Pedro Pascal, Fred Hechinger, Denzel Washington, Matt Lucas and Joseph Quinn.

It is understood that Pedro will play a Roman general who was condemned to become a gladiator after he wanted to stop sending men to war.

While Denzel will take on the role of an arms and commodity dealer who bears a grudge against emperors.

In pictures, published by the MailOnline, Paul can be seen in full armour during a fight scene in East Sussex.

Filming recently resumed there for reshoots after the initial production wrapped up in Morocco.

The original “Gladiator” film, was released in 2000 and featured Russell Crowe as Maximus.

It also won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor.

While not many details of the highly anticipated sequel have been released, we know that the story is set after Maximus’ death, and will follow Lucius, previously played by Spencer Treat Clark, who admired Maximus and believed his mother to be dead.

We can’t wait to see this one on the big screen!
