It’s official, Bryan Murray, one of Fair City’s most beloved actors, has announced his retirement from the hit Irish soap after 20 years.
The news follows the actor’s 2019 diagnosis with Alzheimer’s disease, though he expressed a strong desire at the time to continue working on the popular show.
He then went public with his story in 2022 to raise awareness of the disease and to help others.
Bryan first appeared on Fair City in 2005, taking on the role of Bob Charles, a man whose complex relationships and gripping storylines captured the attention of viewers across the country.

During his time on Fair City, Bob ran McCoy’s Pub before eventually taking over the local café, The Hungry Pig. His character was seen as a cornerstone of the community, frequently engaging in charitable and philanthropic efforts.
However, one of his most memorable storylines on the show was when he ended up homeless, sleeping rough on the streets of Carrigstown and was ostracised from the community.
In a statement, Fair City producers said: “Bryan took on the role of Charles, a man whose complex relationships and gripping storylines captured the attention of viewers across the country.
“Over the years, his portrayal of Bob has been a cornerstone of the show, delivering unforgettable moments”.

Bryan also met his partner, both on and off screen, Una Crawford O’Brien, while working on Fair City.
Yes, their characters began with an on-screen affair that eventually led to marriage, mirroring the real-life bond that grew between them, resulting in a lasting relationship!
Speaking about Bryan’s retirement, Brigie de Courcy, Executive Producer, Fair City added: “His immense talent, dedication, and passion for his craft have left an enduring legacy that will be remembered. While we will miss him on set, we are incredibly grateful for the many wonderful years we’ve shared with him.”
We wish Bryan all the best!
