Erica Cody has revealed how childhood heartache kickstarted her music career from the age of 10.

The Dubliner turned to writing when her mum fell ill at a young age, noting her deepest thoughts and feelings down on paper. Before long, she put melodies to her words and turned them into songs.

“When I was 10, my mam was diagnosed with cancer and luckily she’s fine now, but my mam and dad were separated so I was just being bounced around the place a lot, at no fault of my own or my parents,” she told our sister mag, STELLAR.

“The only way for me to kind of make sense of it, because I was so young was just to write down how I was feeling.

“They started just slowly turning into poems and then my mam got me a guitar when I was 10 or 11 and the poems became songs, and I could record something.”

Since then, Erica has continued to write from the heart about topics which are of huge importance to her, using her voice and making sure she’s heard.

“Now has been the perfect time [to write] because I think so much happened last year. There was everything going on with Black Lives Matter and it was just one thing after another,” she said.

“I think a lot of therapy and music came out of last year. Anything that comes up to you in life teaches you a lesson.

“I was like, ‘I’m going to take positives out of this. year’, what can I do? I can become a better person, and I can write, and that’s what I did.”
