Ed Sheeran has revealed that he almost had a very similar stage name to Irish duo, Jedward. Chatting on the Off Menu podcast the star revealed that he almost gave himself the stage name ‘Redward.’
Sharing that the reason behind this was down to the colour of his hair he said; “When I was like 16, 17 or maybe it was 18, I considered changing it to Redward.”
However, he shared that as well as thinking the name looked a bit odd on the posters he was also delighted when Irish duo Jedward burst on the scene as their names would have been far too similar; “Then Jedward came on X Factor and I was like I’m so happy I didn’t.”
Continuing the Bad Habits singer shared how he first met the twins when he saw them in Canada. Driving down the road he spotted John and Edward; “I rolled down my window, I was like “Jedward,” and then I picked them up and took them to my hotel room. And then instantly I was like “oh f*ck, what have I let myself in for” ’cause they were going on Google and showing me signed Justin Timberlake CDs.”
“And they were like “we’re going to order this one and we’re going to order this one too. What do you think about this, Ed? And I was like, “guys, I need a sleep,” so I went to my room and fell asleep and then they left and I didn’t see them again for a while.”
Since then, he has become closer pals with the duo, and they even sent the star a painting for his little girl Lyra’s nursery when she was born; “I paint, and I sent them a painting, and they sent me a painting back that they did and it was actually really, really good.”
“Jedward have become friends of mine and I love Jedward,” he added.
Finally he shared that he even chose to hang out with them over Paul McCartney at a Beatles event; “I did a Beatles event and Paul McCartney was at it and I was meant to hang with him afterwards, but I said no to go hang with Jedward. They’re really sweet.”
