Dublin star Diarmuid Connolly announces his retirement

Sad news for GAA fans today, as Dublin player Diarmuid Connolly has announced his retirement from inter-county football.

Announcing the news on the official Dublin GAA Instagram page, Diarmuid shared an emotionally charged statement which read:

“I have come to the decision to retire from representing Dublin GAA at inter-county level.”

“I have been fortunate enough to play with an incredible group of players and I have cherished memories for life.

“Throughout my journey with Dublin, I was lucky to have shared it with an exceptional collection of friends who displayed unwavering support and loyalty to me during my time.

“I would like to thank my club, St Vincent’s GAA and the Dublin County Board for giving me the opportunity to represent Dublin from underage to senior level.”

Hailed as one of the greatest Dublin players ever, Diarmuid got his start with the team in 2007, and is now leaving with six All-Irelands, ten Leinster titles, four National Football Leagues, and two All-Stars under his belt.

Concluding his retirement announcement, he said:

“I would like to express my eternal appreciation to the incredibly loyal, passionate and devoted Dublin supporters, who were always there for us, no matter the score. You will always hold a special place in my heart.”

“Thanks for the memories.”

Soon after his announcement fans took to social media to share their thoughts on the talented player and what he has achieved in his career over the years.

“What a player Diarmuid Connolly was. He could turn a game in it’s head in a few swift moves, pure class. Enjoy the next chapter Diarmuid, there’s a serious career and legacy behind ya!” wrote one.

“In our national sport there are so many legends in every county but Diarmuid Connolly is in a class all of his own a truly gifted footballer enjoy your retirement,” said another.
