Doireann Garrihy has candidly shared her experience of birth complications after welcoming her baby daughter, Rosie.

Speaking openly for the first time about Rosie’s arrival on the podcast The Baby Tribe, Doireann reflected on how her carefully considered birth plans shifted during labour, ultimately leading to a C-section.

Reflecting on the moment she was reunited with Rosie and her husband, Mark, Doireann said: “That was amazing.

“It all was so new. I had never experienced birth, that sounds like such an obvious thing to say because it was my first baby, but it was a massive thing that I wasn’t ready for,” she candidly admitted.

“But I didn’t know any different so when Mark came in, and he had her in his arms, was incredible. Because really, the first person I saw holding her was him.

“So for him to walk in and I was finally okay, and to hand her to me, and to be just us, was amazing.”

Despite the uncertainty and fear that can come with the unexpected, she said the overwhelming feeling was relief when she finally heard that there was “nothing wrong with her.”

Doireann also spoke about the first night at home as a family of three, explaining that while it was incredibly special, it was also raw and overwhelming.

The early weeks of motherhood, she revealed, were filled with both joy and self-doubt.

In particular, she opened up about feeding struggles that proved far more difficult than she had anticipated.

Like many new mums, she found herself keeping a mental “scoreboard” of wins and losses, questioning whether she was doing enough and being far harder on herself than anyone else would be.

By sharing such an honest account of her experience, Doireann has no doubt offered comfort and reassurance to other new mums navigating the unpredictable and emotional early days of motherhood.
