Doireann Garrihy has spoken candidly about the pressure many women feel to “bounce back” after having a baby, calling the expectation placed on new mums “ridiculous”.

The broadcaster, who welcomed her daughter Rosie with husband Mark Mehigan in October 2025, opened up about motherhood and the realities of postpartum life in a recent interview with the Irish Independent.

The RTÉ 2FM presenter has been on maternity leave since Rosie’s arrival and admitted that being in the public eye can make insecurities even more difficult to navigate.

“I think it’s next to impossible to be in the media without being insecure about the way you present, especially after a baby too,” she told the publication.

However, the 2FM star made it clear she has no plans to rush back into work or chase the unrealistic idea of a postpartum transformation.

“I have no massive intention to do any big ‘bounce back’, that awful term that people use,” she said.

“I’m really glad that I’ve taken this time, and all I had to do was focus on her.”

Doireann admitted that stepping away from work wasn’t necessarily easy in an industry where there can be pressure to return quickly.

“It’s not necessarily easy to do that in this industry, because you do sort of go, ‘I’d better get back on air, or back to podcasting,’ but I just made a decision to say no.”

The presenter has been open with followers on social media about her pregnancy and postpartum journey, explaining that sharing her experience has helped her feel less alone.

“It makes me feel so normal, that regardless of if you are in the media or not, everyone feels that same pressure, and it’s ridiculous – we shouldn’t,” she said.

“All that matters at the moment is Rosie.”
