It’s been a tough week for Phoebe Bridgers and Paul Mescal as the internet has went wild with rumours of a breakup. Although neither party has spoken out to confirm or deny anything. But the latest piece of evidence looks pretty damning, and Phoebe alluded to a breakup in her latest song.
Phoebe collabed with SZA for the track “Ghost in the Machine,” from SZA’s latest album SOS. But in the song Phoebe sings about a couple fighting and seemingly breaking up.
With the lyrics reading: “You said all of my friends are on my payroll / You’re not wrong, you’re an a–hole,”
“Screaming at you in the Ludlow / I was yours for free,” and “on my own in an airport bar or hotel lobby.”
Now we know what your thinking, “SZA’s masterpiece of an album was just released, the song has to have been written months ago!” Well, nope. Phoebe confirmed the song was written just a week before the release meaning they worked on it at the end of November, just weeks ago.

As Phoebe told NME: “SZA just hit me up, she just sent me a DM, it all happened so fast.”
“I wasn’t really used to that in the pop world, because vinyl isn’t so much of a consideration until way later, it’s just like, ‘Do you want to be on this record? OK, it’s out next week’, which I really like. I like that turnaround time.”
Sooooooooo…Okay its not looking great but the song might not be based on reality, or might have take inspiration from somewhere else.
The rumours began on America gossip site JustJared, which reported that Phoebe was seen out on a ‘date’ with comedian Bo Burnham in New York earlier this week.

A source told another US publication, Jezebel, that Bo gave Phoebe his “undivided and doting attention.” They also went on to say that their dated seemed “flirtatious. Like he was trying to impress her.”
This isn’t the only source that has shared bad news for the couple. Gossip account DeuxMoi shared quotes from a source claiming that their engagement is over.
“Can confirm the engagement is off between Paul Mescal and Phoebe Bridgers,” they said.

Continuing on, they added: “It’s not an open relationship in the slightest. Paul found out about Phoebe and Bo and called off the engagement.”
The two have been linked together since the summer of 2020, taking their red carpet debut late last year.
They have not yet addressed the break-up rumours.
