Today Show presenter Daithi O Se has opened up about his career past and present, revealing what he would do if his TV career didn’t work out.
Chatting with the Irish Sunday Mirror the Kerry man reflected on one of the jobs he had in his youth as a ferry driver of the Blasket Islands. Joking that he would return to his gig as a tour guide should his telly career fail he said:
“I’d go back to working on boats out at the Blasket Islands if I had to”
Reminiscing on that time for him, Daithi says that although he didn’t realise it at the time, his days working on a boat are on reflection some of the best of his life.
“I was probably 19 to 21, I didn’t have a mortgage, we were on the boat all day, no socks, no shoes, the uniform was shorts and T-shirt”
“In the evening time you would catch a few mackerel and then that’s your dinner, you go to the local pub and you’d have a few pints”
“Anytime you look back on a period of your life when the weather was always fine, I think it’s a sign, it was a really happy time in your life.”
Having come a long way from his skipper days, Daithi is now happily married to American native Rita Talty with whom he shares a six-year-old son with, Michael Og. Also chatting about family life and the importance of spending quality time together, Daithi says that he and Rita rarely spend time apart from their little one.
“Spending time together is so important”
“We have movie night every Saturday night but it will always involve the little fella, too”
“You know how people want to go away for romantic nights, we don’t want to go anywhere without him.”
