Comedian PJ Gallagher’s life story is coming to the stage

He had quite a chaotic childhood.

You may think of PJ Gallagher has Jake Stevens, from his early days on Naked Camera, or even as Principle Barry Walsh in the more recent TV show The Young Offenders, but his real-life story is quite compelling too.

A story based on the comedian’s true life is coming to the stage and was written by PJ and Una McKevitt.

Madhouse will be on The Peacock stage in the Abbey Theatre as part of Dublin Fringe Festival.

The show follows and man called Bobby, who at age 10, had his Ma move 6 men with schizophrenia into the family home to look after.

Confronted with memories of his childhood after his Da dies, Bobby’s past begins to collide with the present.

It’s raining outside and he’s stuck indoors; Ma’s restocking the industrial-sized pill cabinet, Da’s in the pub, Martin’s doing laps of the garden, Marv is missing and Mump can see a gorilla in the hall.

PJ, who was adopted as a baby, previously spoke about drawing inspiration for comedy from his family home.

“My folks were crazy too and weren’t very strict, so it was a great bit of craic growing up in our house,” he told the Independent.

“It was like a comedy university. I am so close to my mam, and am a typical Irish mammy’s boy. I call to her every day to make sure she’s okay.”

Speaking about the upcoming show, the comedian took to Twitter to say: “Yeah, I’m pretty excited about this. Tickets on sale now.”
