Christy Dignam’s dad has sadly passed away, after contracting Covid19.
The singer’s father had been very ill for the last number of months, and sadly couldn’t fight the virus.
In an official statement, his Aslan bandmates said, “It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Christy’s father, Christopher (Christy) Dignam Senior.
“Today Christy has lost his biggest fan and influence in life. We ask that you respect Christy and his family’s privacy at this extremely difficult time.”
Earlier this week, Christy spoke to Sean O’Rourke on RTE Radio One about his dad’s deteriorating health.
“About six months ago he got pneumonia and he was talking in riddles.
“The nurses told us when his temperature came down he’d be grand but he never came back to us,” he said.
“It seemed to have triggered dementia in him. I’ve tried to talk to him on the phone.
“He was asking why nobody was visiting him and I tried to explain to him but he just couldn’t understand.”
Christy shared his heartbreak over the thoughts of arranging a funeral for his dad, as due to government restrictions surrounding Covid19, the whole family wouldn’t be able to attend.
“If there’s a funeral we can’t all go because he had eight kids…all the grandkids, great-grandkids, none of them will be able to go to the funeral so that’s very hard.”
Our thoughts are with them all at this very difficult time.
