Caroline Flavin on the restorative power of sound healing

In a world that rarely seems to switch off, finding genuine moments of peace can feel like a luxury. But for holistic practitioner Caroline Flavin, relaxation is something we can all learn to access – sometimes simply by listening.

Through her practice Alchemy of Sound, Caroline offers sound healing sessions designed to calm the nervous system, reduce stress and help people reconnect with a sense of balance. She recently joined us at one of our Self Care Sessions events, where she facilitated a beautiful sound healing experience for guests, helping everyone unwind and truly switch off for a while.

Caroline’s path into sound healing began more than two decades ago while living abroad.

“My path started while living in Tokyo in 2000,” she explains. “I came across a colour therapy system of consciousness and healing called Aura-Soma®, which I trained in when I returned to Ireland.”

That discovery opened the door to the wider world of holistic therapies. Caroline went on to train in Reiki, Integrated Energy Therapy (IET) angelic healing and shamanism, while also hosting drumming circles and relaxation classes.

Along the way she worked in a crystal shop in Cork called Dervish, where she hosted many of her classes before later moving into a managerial role in the shop’s Dublin branch.

“When we started selling crystal singing bowls, I fell in love with them,” she says. “That led me to train in sound healing both in Ireland and abroad.”

Today, Caroline is a qualified professional sound healer with twenty years’ experience in the holistic space. Since 2016 she has been delivering bespoke sessions using a unique combination of quartz singing bowls, Acutonics Tuning Forks® and Aura-Soma colour therapy to help bring deep relaxation to her clients.

For those new to the practice, sound healing can sound a little mysterious, but Caroline says the experience is gentle, relaxing and tailored to each individual.

Before a session begins, clients complete a detailed intake form so she can understand their needs.

“At the start of a session we have a chat where I explain how I work and what will happen,” she says. “We set a clear intention for the client’s optimum health and balance and use a beautifully scented Aura-Soma product to cleanse the aura and help the relaxation begin.”

Clients then lie on a massage table while Caroline uses different sound healing instruments both on and around the body.

“I apply tuning forks along the spine and to specific acupuncture points, and play different combinations of Tibetan and quartz crystal singing bowls,” she explains. “All of this helps the body to relax.”

There’s also a scientific reason certain sounds can make us feel calm, emotional or deeply relaxed.

“The frequencies and vibrations of sound healing instruments help brainwaves slow down,” Caroline says. “The nervous system can switch from the sympathetic ‘fight or flight’ response to the parasympathetic ‘rest and digest’ state.”

Because the body is largely made up of water, sound waves also resonate through our tissues and cells.

“As the cells resonate, cortisol levels, blood pressure and heart rate can lower, bringing deep relaxation,” she says. “When the body relaxes, it becomes possible for emotions to gently release.”

In recent years Caroline has seen growing interest in sound healing from people dealing with stress, anxiety and burnout.

“Sound healing is a very easy and accessible way for people to release stress,” she says. “When the body and mind relax without effort, it can really help counteract stress and burnout.”

People often notice they feel lighter, calmer and more at peace afterwards, with many also reporting better quality sleep.

While a sound healing session can be deeply restorative, Caroline says there are simple ways people can create calmer sound environments in everyday life.

“First, notice what loud or distracting sounds you’re allowing into your day,” she says. “Things like loud advertisements or fast, noisy social media videos can all influence our nervous system.”

She recommends turning down the volume where possible, choosing more carefully what you listen to, and avoiding keeping your phone beside the bed at night.

“If you have a garden, spend at least five minutes outside each day absorbing the sounds of nature,” she adds. “You can also listen to relaxing healing frequency music or binaural beats online.”

It all comes back to what we choose to tune into.

“My business name is ‘Alchemy of Sound – Tune into Peace’,” Caroline says. “The frequency of what we tune into determines the state of our nervous system, mind and emotions. Tune into peace and you’ll start feeling more peaceful.”
