It’s been reported that Brian Dowling could be joining Doireann Garrihy on the RTÉ 2fm show breakfast show, replacing Eoghan McDermott.

A number of Irish stars have been tipped to join Doireann on the show, including Marty Guilfoyle and Carl Mullan. According to the Irish Mail on Sunday, Brian is very much in the running to present the breakfast show.

“Brian may act the joker but he has smarts in spades which is much-needed as listeners are now more in tune with current affairs”, a source revealed to the paper.

“Doireann provides the laughter, but the show needs someone who has a handle on current affairs and slightly more serious subjects.”

A final decision is yet to be made, but RTÉ bosses are keen to find the “right host” to work alongside Doireann.

This comes after Doireann revealed that she’s taking a break from the show, revealing to her Instagram followers “I’m going to be leaving the studio and heading directly to what we like to call the 2FM radio idea factory.

“Which is basically just my desk in 2FM but the factory thing sounded cooler. And I’m going to be doing what you would do in a radio ideas factory, particularly the breakfast show department. I’m gonna be trialling, testing and fine-tuning a brand new breakfast show.”

Currently, Tara Stewart and Stephen Byrne are filling in for Doireann weekdays from 6 am.
