Brendan O’Carroll has commented on Rory Cowan’s departure from the show for the first time.

The Mrs Brown’s Boy’s creator has said he wishes the news was a joke.

Rory announced this week that he handed in his notice on the show, after working with Brendan for over 26 years.

The actor explained that he was no longer content on the show.

“I hadn’t been happy working for the Mrs Brown’s Boys company for the last 18 months to two years,” Rory told the Daily Mail.

“I feel that 26 years is enough so I decided it was time to go. I told Brendan on June 16 about my decision to leave. That’s when I handed in my notice.

“I was supposed to leave at the end of that week, but Brendan said that would be impossible and asked if I’d stay on until the end of the London O2 gigs. So I agreed to that.”

Brendan has now been chatting to heartbroken fans on Twitter about the news.

When one fan asked if any of the other actors would be leaving the iconic show, Brendan was quick to reassure them.

“No Shaun. We will all be there, to entertain YOU and give you a few laughs x” he said.

Another fan asked Brendan if the news of Rory leaving was a joke, to which he simply replied: ‘I wish’.

Another Twitter user said that Rory would be missed, and Brendan agreed by saying: ‘you bet’.

The show creator also said that the replacement for Rory is a surprise that will be revealed at the end of the year.

“It’s a surprise that will be revealed in this years Christmas Day special,” he said.

Rory didn’t go into the reason he was unhappy with the show, but added that he was looking forward to a break.

“I’m not going into details about why I was unhappy. I did the final show, packed my stuff into a small Waitrose plastic bag and just left the venue.”

“I’d love to do something like a weekend radio show but we’ll see what comes down the line. For now I’m going to take a little time off.”
