Bono has revealed that his most embarrassing U2 moment to date, is a song he penned for the band while in Africa.
Despite being the front man of one of the most successful bands in the world, it appears the singer still cringes over things from the past.
The 56-year-old has admitted that his biggest embarrassment is one of the bands hit songs, Where the Streets Have No Name, which he wrote while in a tent in Ethiopia – and he had no idea what a hit it would turn into!
“You want to know my most humiliating U2 moment? Where The Streets Have No Name.” he told the Irish Mirror.
“When I wrote those lyrics I was in a tent in Ethiopia. I scratched down some thoughts, ‘I want to run, I want to hide, I want to tear down the walls that hold me inside’. I thought they were fairly inane but when we recorded the song, those words just stayed.
“Now I have to sing them for the rest of my life. And it’s U2’s most successful live song!”
Even though the band have scooped up countless Grammy Awards, sold millions of records and are still going strong 40 years on, Bono still wishes U2 were better than they are.
“Even today, I wish U2 were a better band. I wish we were a more talented band.”he said. “I have to go through excruciating humility these days when I set about writing a song.”
“Every time I hear a U2 song on the radio, I wince.”
